• conducted by a team led by Yoshihiro Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin 5/12 ^
• H5N1 spreads easily among poultry and wild birds but is hard to transmit to humans ^
• it is brutal, killing more than 1 infected person in 2 ^
• team took a key gene haemagluttinin or HA, from H5N1 virus^
• added mutation compatible with human respiratory cells^
• took strain of H1N1 flu, replaced its HA gene with engineered one^
•  tested "H5/H1 hybrid" on ferrets because respiratory system is so similar to humans^
• infected ferrets passed on the virus to others in respiratory droplets^
• proving new virus spreads through coughs and sneezes

..so just how long does it take to incubate a killer flu season in US? 6 months??
